Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has frozen two foreign bank accounts holding $4.5 million allegedly linked to Bahria Town as part of a major crackdown on an international money laundering network.
According to NAB officials, the accounts are maintained at Silver Bank in Mauritius and are registered in the names of Ahmad Ali Riaz and Mubashra Ali Malik. The action was carried out under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2010, following formal approval from an accountability court in Karachi.
NAB said that the funds were originally transferred out of Pakistan through an illegal hawala/hundi network.
Officials further revealed that the money was first routed through the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before being moved to Mauritius and deposited into joint bank accounts there.
With the assistance of Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NAB has initiated formal legal proceedings to confiscate the funds. Authorities said efforts to recover and repatriate the money to Pakistan are now in their final stages.
NAB described the operation as part of its broader commitment to tracing and recovering illicit assets held abroad, emphasizing that international cooperation remains a key component of its asset recovery strategy.
