Karachi’s beaches must be cleaned, says Shaniera Akram

KARACHI: The wife of former captain Wasim Akram, Shaniera Akram has said that the media should broadcast the images of the garbage piled up on the beach.
Shaniera Akram on Twitter shared the images from the Karachi beach in a bid to force authorities to clean-up the area.

In a series of messages posted on Tuesday, she said that the media should broadcast the images of the garbage piled up on the beach, as it has a duty of care to protect the lives of the people of Karachi.

Shaniera tweeted, “I have walked on Clifton beach every day for the last four years and I have never been scared until today. This beach needs to be shut down now.”

She tweeted, “Medical waste, syringes, vials of blood that has come in from the ocean has spread across Clifton beach for kilometres.”

She asked the authorities in a tweet, “Why is the beach still open? For me, this is not a blame game this is a “we need to act now” problem and close the beach. I don’t want to be in this position but I have no choice peoples lives are at stake and I was faced with a moral obligation. People needed to know about this.”

Hospital waste, especially several open-needle syringes, have washed up on the shore and pose a severe health hazard for the citizens who are visiting Karachi beach in the rainy weather.
