Meta fined $1.3 billion over transfer of EU user data to the US
DUBLIN: Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has been fined a record one billion 20 million euros for transferring the data of EU users to the United States.

Meta has also been ordered to stop transferring data collected from Facebook users in Europe to the United States, in a major ruling against the social media company for violating European Union data protection rules.

Following the ruling, Irish authorities instructed Facebook not to transfer user data to the US in any way, and European regulators proposed new rules in December that followed the US ban. Negotiations were also held to ensure data protection of European citizens.
Now Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has said that the European Data Protection Board has ordered Meta to receive a fine of one billion 20 million euros. According to the Irish regulatory body, the social media company did not consider the risks posed by the transfer of data to the United States to people’s fundamental rights and freedoms, which is being fined.
The Facebook-owned company has been given 5 months to stop transferring user data to the US and 6 months to stop monitoring the data in the US.
