KARACHI: The medical student on Monday staged a protest against the staggering 185 percent hike in Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC) fees.
As per the recent notification released by the college administration, the admission fees for the open merit category have been raised from Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000. Additionally, applicants opting for self-finance admission are now required to pay Rs 100,000 as the admission fee, along with a total of Rs 1.2 million.
The notification from the KMDC administration also discloses an increase in tuition fees for students, escalating from Rs 50,000 to Rs 117,600.
Facing the financial challenges prevalent in the country, students are appealing to Mayor Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, to reconsider the fee hikes. They emphasize that the ongoing financial crisis has already burdened students, making such fee increments unreasonable.
Taimur Ahmed, a member of the KMC city council, expressed his concern, citing the lack of precedent for such exorbitant fee hikes. He pointed out that despite a reduction in petrol prices, transportation fees for students have surged by 80 percent.
In light of these grievances, the city council member called upon Mayor Karachi to convene a council meeting and address the concerns raised regarding the development charges under the guise of fees.
