A 44-year-old man has been arrested following a shooting outside the York Mosque and Islamic Centre in the city of York, North Yorkshire, England.
According to British media reports, the incident occurred on Thursday outside the mosque on Bull Lane. Police confirmed that no one was injured in the shooting.
North Yorkshire Police said a local white British man was arrested in connection with the incident. Investigators believe the weapon used was likely an air weapon, such as an air gun.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene in a silver-coloured vehicle before being traced and taken into custody.
Police said the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue.
In a statement, North Yorkshire Police said it was too early to determine the motive behind the “concerning incident.” However, officers reassured York’s Muslim community that every effort was being made to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
The force also confirmed that police patrols in the area surrounding the mosque would be increased, particularly during prayer times. Officers are also expected to meet with the mosque’s imam as part of their community engagement efforts.
Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage related to the incident to contact North Yorkshire Police or Crimestoppers to assist with the investigation.
