LPG mafia out of control as gas sold Rs200 per kg above OGRA rates

The LPG mafia in Pakistan has reportedly become increasingly unchecked, with liquefied petroleum gas being sold far above official rates, in some cases nearly Rs200 per kilogram higher than the notified price, industry representatives said.

The maximum consumer price for a domestic LPG cylinder (11.8 kg), as notified by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), is set at Rs3,643.41, with the per-kilogram price fixed at around Rs308.76.

According to Chairman of the LPG Distributors Association Irfan Khokhar, OGRA has fixed the official LPG price at Rs309 per kg; however, in several markets it is being sold for as much as Rs500 per kg.

He alleged that OGRA and other relevant government institutions have failed to ensure the sale of LPG at official rates.

Khokhar said the inflated prices are extracting billions of rupees daily from consumers, forcing people to buy expensive LPG.

He urged authorities to take immediate action to enforce official rates and crack down on hoarding and profiteering.
