LAHORE: The Traffic Police’s zero-tolerance campaign against e-challan defaulters claimed its latest high-profile case today, as a vehicle was seized on Lower Mall with a staggering Rs 98,500 in unpaid fines.
The discovery came during a routine inspection, where traffic officials found the vehicle had violated traffic signals four times and repeatedly flouted lane discipline, accumulating the massive penalty.
A spokesperson for the Lahore Traffic Police confirmed the seizure, stating, “This is a clear example of the consequences for those who ignore traffic laws. The crackdown is in full swing, and defaulters will face immediate action.”
The operation, it may be recalled here, is part of a city-wide drive announced earlier this month by Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi, who directed recovery squads to prioritize the top 100 e-challan defaulters.
Using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, authorities are tracking vehicles with outstanding fines in real time. The Safe City Project, along with integrated Police Service Centers and Licensing Systems, ensures defaulters are identified and penalized without delay.
To further compel compliance, the Lahore Police have blocked access to 14 essential police services for e-challan defaulters, including vehicle registration and license renewals.
The crackdown extends beyond e-challans.
A province-wide initiative now mandates helmet use for motorcyclists, with violations resulting in fines and 24-hour motorcycle impoundments.
Additionally, authorities are strictly enforcing lane discipline, having already impounded over 20,000 motorcycles last month for lane-line violations.
