Lahore received 263 millimetres of rainfall in a single spell on Wednesday, causing severe urban flooding and widespread disruption across the city.
Several roads were submerged under several feet of water, leading to major traffic congestion. Numerous motorcycles and vehicles stalled in flooded streets, while boats were reportedly used in parts of the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) due to the unusually high water levels.
According to a spokesperson for the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), the highest rainfall was recorded in the Lahore Airport area at 263mm.
Other recorded rainfall totals included 157.4mm in Tajpura, 143mm in Kahna, 136mm in Shadipura, 133mm in Mughalpura, 116mm on Mall Road, 112.2mm in Manawan, 81mm in Johar Town, and 64.6mm at Chowk Nakhuda.
In DHA, floodwater rose to the roof level of an underpass, while the Harbanspura Underpass was closed to traffic after becoming inundated.
Floodwater also entered homes in Tajpura, causing significant hardship for residents. Several areas, including Canal Road opposite Journalists’ Colony, Jallo Park, Medical Scheme, Tajpura Scheme, and surrounding neighborhoods, experienced water accumulation several feet deep.
The heavy rain also led to fatal and non-fatal incidents. Near Kahna on Ferozepur Road, a motorcycle reportedly skidded on the wet road and crashed into a utility pole, killing two brothers after they sustained severe head injuries.
In a separate incident in DHA Phase IV, the roof of a house constructed with T.R. girders collapsed, injuring four people.
