LAHORE: An accountability court on Thursday approved the physical remand of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Muhammad Asif till January 13 and handed him over to National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
Judge Jawad-ul-Hassan heard the assets beyond income case against the PML-N lawmaker. NAB officials produced Khawaja Asif before the accountability court and sought the physical remand of the accused
The prosecutor told the court that an inquiry is underway against Khawaja Asif regarding his personal assets. He said the PML-N leader had been given several chances to give clarification but has failed to provide a satisfactory response to investigators.
During the hearing, Khawaja Asif said he became a Member of National Assembly (MNA) for seven times and already faced an inquiry in Rawalpindi, while NAB initiated the same inquiry in Lahore He added that the details of transactions have been provided to NAB investigators.
Later, the judge approved the physical remand of Khawaja Asif to NAB till January 13. The court directed authorities to provide homemade food, medical facilities and allow him to meet his family members and lawyers.
Khawaja Asif, his wife and son reportedly possess assets worth over Rs810 million. He was arrested in Islamabad on Tuesday after attending a meeting at the residence of PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal.
Yesterday, an accountability court in Islamabad approved one-day transit remand before transferring him to Lahore for proceeding in the case in the concerned court.
Chairman NAB Justice retd Javed Iqbal had approved his arrest after the former defence minister could not convince the three-member committee of NAB investigators on possessing inordinate wealth.
