KARACHI: K-Electric (KE) reported that its industrial feeders’ electricity consumption reached a record high of 6.08 billion units in FY26, following an increase in Pakistan’s GDP growth to 3.7% during the fiscal year.
The company said this reinforces KE’s role in supporting Karachi’s economy through dependable electricity supply.
KE Chief Executive Officer Syed Muhammad Taha stated that the result reflects the combined efforts of the Government of Pakistan, the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), and Karachi’s industrial community, which together have helped create an environment conducive to investment and economic progress.
He also noted that Karachi continues to be central to Pakistan’s industrial and commercial development. KE added that it has been providing load-shed-exempted power to industries since 2013 and remains committed to supporting growth with reliable and sustainable electricity.
KE said its industrial feeders cover a wide range of manufacturing and industrial units across multiple zones, and that these zones use 100% smart meters. According to the company, businesses can therefore track electricity consumption in real time.
The highest consumption was recorded in the B3 category, which includes industries with power deployment between 501 and 5,000 kW. This category comprises units in sectors such as cement, steel, and textiles.
Looking at month-wise figures, the company stated that June 2026 recorded the highest industrial consumption, followed by April 2026. On a yearly basis, it said the previous peak was in FY22, when industrial consumption on the grid stood at 5.84 billion units, alongside GDP growth of more than 6%.
KE added that after FY22, industrial consumption remained moderate despite economic challenges, but FY26 showed a significant 20% year-on-year increase compared to FY25, when consumption was 5.04 billion units. The company attributed the rise to government incentives encouraging industries to shift from captive power to on-grid supply, as well as the rebound in GDP growth.
KE also said it energized 349 new industrial connections and supported load expansions for another 273 cases, bringing an overall addition of 168 MW of demand to the grid.
The company further stated that industrial feeders have demonstrated better recovery rates across customer categories, and emphasized that timely bill payments are a key factor behind load-shed exemption. KE said it will continue working to ensure uninterrupted power supply for Karachi’s industries, even amid operational constraints.
