The travel difficulties for the citizens of Karachi are now going to be reduced as the Yellow Line BRT project is nearing completion and will be inaugurated in December this year.
Millions of people face travel hassles every day in Karachi. According to reports, the city needs at least 15,000 buses, but in the current situation, only a few thousand old and substandard vehicles are in public use. That is why the transport crisis is considered one of the biggest problems in the port city.
The Yellow Line BRT project was launched in 2022 and was touted as an important part of the Karachi Master Transport Plan. The project consists of a 21-km-long corridor being constructed from Dawood Chowrangi to Khalid bin Waleed Road.
Thirty-six modern stations will be set up on the route, while about three lakh passengers will be able to use it daily. The initial cost of the project is set at US$428 million. The project aims to provide modern, safe, and environmentally friendly travel facilities to the citizens of Karachi.
The Yellow Line BRT will also include electric buses to reduce the increasing environmental pollution in the city and provide citizens with a modern standard of public transport.
The project is Karachi’s third major BRT system after the Green Line BRT and the Red Line, which will not only reduce travel pressure but also reduce people’s dependence on expensive and unregulated public transport.
It is also worth mentioning that both the World Bank and the Sindh government have played a key role in making the project a success.
