KARACHI: The port city today (Sunday) witnessed one of the coldest days in history, recording the minimum temperature of 10.5 degrees Celsius, according to a statement from the meteorological department.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) informed that Karachi has broken its ten years winter record this November. Previously, the lowest temperature was recorded in Nov 2017 when it fell to 11°C. A temperature of 12°C was recorded in Nov 2010.
The lowest temperature ever recorded in the city was 7.4°C in 1986. The Met office further informed that Karachi would experience dry weather and a cold night in the next 24 hours as well.
The minimum temperature recorded this month was 10.5 °C, whereas the maximum temperature is likely to fluctuate between 28 °C and 30 °C, the met office informed.
Earlier this week, Karachi experienced its first rain spell heralding the beginning of the year’s winter season. The Met department informed that the spell immediately pushed down the mercury to as low as 16°C and by the next morning it further declined to 14°C.
The PMD also predicted that the metropolis could further witness more rains and get a much colder than normal winter in December when two to three good spells of rain could hit the city.
The wave of cold weather has arrived in other areas of the country as well. Northern areas including Naran, Galiyat, Abbottabad, and Azad Kashmir were covered in a blanket of snow.
In the last 24 hours, the lowest temperatures were recorded in Kalam at -5 degrees, Giglit at -2 degrees and Bagrot at -3 degrees. The Met Department said the weather will remain the same in the upcoming week with more snow and rainfall.
