KARACHI: A power shutdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station has severely disrupted the water supply system, resulting in suspension of water distribution to large parts of the city, according to the Water Corporation.
Officials said the shutdown was carried out by K-Electric to repair a technical fault in Power Transformer No. 1 at the Dhabeji grid station. The shutdown was implemented about half an hour earlier than scheduled, the Water Corporation added.
As a result of the outage, 10 out of 21 pumping units at the Dhabeji Pumping Station have been shut down, significantly affecting the water supply system to Karachi. Water distribution to various areas of the city has been suspended.
K-Electric had initially informed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation that the shutdown would last for one hour; however, authorities said there is still no confirmed timeline for full restoration of electricity.
Officials warned that restoration of water supply across the city may take several hours or even days, depending on the resolution of the technical fault, sources said.
The disruption has raised concerns of a developing water shortage in multiple areas of Karachi, as the city continues to rely heavily on the Dhabeji Pumping Station for its water needs.
