A video of Moulana Anwar Shah, the young owner of the famous Karachi seminary Jamia Ahsan-ul-Oloom, is circulating on social media, particularly on Facebook. In the video, he is brutally punishing a student while also using objectionable language.
Shah, the son of the late Maulana Zarwali Khan, a prominent cleric and founder of Jamia Ahsan-ul-Oloom, took over the seminary after his father’s death and also works there as a teacher.
In the viral video, during a class, he harshly scolds a student for not wearing an amamah (headscarf) and then calls someone to bring a stick and beat the student. Throughout this punishment, he continuously uses objectionable and tyrannical language.
After the video went viral, various individuals—including supporters of the religious segment of society—condemned his behavior as inappropriate and unacceptable. Critics argue that such actions will damage the image of seminaries and their administration. Some believe that the young Shah is unfit to be a teacher and needs proper education and training before leading a class.
One user also urged Maulana Taqi Usmani and other senior clerics to take notice of Shah’s behavior and to hand over the renowned Jamia Ahsan-ul-Oloom to a more decent and mature person.
