KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has rolled out a barcode system for all registered water tankers operating in the city, Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced.
In a video message, Wahab said residents can now instantly check whether a water tanker is legal or illegal by scanning its barcode.
“Scan the barcode on a tanker with your mobile phone and you will immediately get the tanker’s details, driver information, route, fitness status and water source,” he said. Each registered tanker’s identity, driver’s photo and ID details can be verified through the code.
The mayor said the barcode tracking system has been introduced to eliminate the illegal tanker mafia. “Citizens should scan the barcode of any tanker that comes to their home to verify its legal status. The aim is to identify unregistered tankers and bring transparency to water delivery,” he added.
Wahab urged the public to support the crackdown on illegal tankers and report violations. “Complete details of registered tankers are now available on mobile. This is a key step to stop illegal water supply,” he said.
The move comes amid complaints of water supply shortages and a reported 200 per cent hike in tanker rates in parts of Karachi.
