Karachi continued to endure intense heat on Wednesday, with feels-like temperature soaring to 49°C despite the actual temperature remaining lower, as a nationwide heatwave persisted and authorities urged residents to take precautionary measures.
The temperature in Karachi reached 37°C by 1pm on Wednesday, while high humidity levels pushed the feels-like temperature to 49°C, according to data from the Met Office.
Relative humidity was recorded at 56%, with southwest winds blowing at a speed of 26 kilometers per hour. The city experienced similarly oppressive conditions a day earlier, when the heat index climbed to 48°C amid the ongoing heatwave affecting several parts of the country.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) last week issued a heatwave alert for multiple regions, warning that the spell is expected to continue until June 12.
Authorities have advised children, women and elderly citizens to take extra precautions during the extreme weather.
Residents have also been urged to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm and to stay well hydrated.
According to the PMD, temperatures in affected areas could remain up to 7°C above normal due to the influence of a high-pressure system.
The Met Office forecast that Karachi’s maximum temperature would likely range between 40°C and 43°C from June 8 to June 12, adding that night-time temperatures are also expected to remain elevated during this period.
