KARACHI: Transport groups in Karachi have suddenly called for an all-out strike starting right away, and it looks like it could go on for quite some time.
The Karachi Transport Alliance and the Karachi Bus Owners Association announced the protest after their talks with traffic police completely broke down. They’re furious over the heavy fines being slapped on buses and the planned police crackdown set to begin from July 1.
According to the alliance, authorities have already issued massive challans on a large number of vehicles, and now they’re gearing up for strict action. “Negotiations didn’t lead anywhere,” one of the leaders said. “We had no option but to start this indefinite strike from today.”
The decision means buses, minibuses, and other public transport will stay off the roads until the issue is resolved. This is going to hit daily commuters hard, especially in a city that already struggles with traffic and transport problems.
So far, there’s been no response from the traffic police or the provincial government. People are being told to find other ways to get around and keep an eye on updates.
