KARACHI: The metropolis is experiencing intense heat conditions today, with localized “Excessive Heat” alerts active in several inland neighborhoods including Model Colony, where temperatures are forecast to peak at 37°C with humidity levels near 70 percent.
According to current weather data, the heat index — or “feels like” temperature — is expected to reach 45°C or higher during the afternoon hours, creating a high risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
While the Pakistan Meteorological Department has stated that Karachi is not under an official city-wide heatwave declaration, which requires three consecutive days of 40°C or above, authorities caution that the combination of high temperature and humidity meets dangerous thresholds for human health.
The alert issued this morning for eastern parts and adjoining areas reflects conditions that are significantly more severe than coastal areas of the city, which benefit from the moderating sea breeze. Similar conditions are expected across much of interior Karachi through Thursday, with daytime highs between 37°C and 38°C.
Residents and citizens have been strongly advised to minimize exposure to direct sunlight between 11am and 4pm when heat stress peaks.
The Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority urges people to remain indoors in cooled or shaded environments, increase fluid intake regardless of thirst, and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Elderly individuals, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable and should be checked on regularly by family or neighbors.
Besides these, outdoor workers and laborers have been directed to reschedule strenuous activity to early morning or evening hours and to take frequent breaks in the shade with access to drinking water. Pet owners and livestock caretakers should also ensure animals have shelter and adequate water supply.
