K-Electric has announced that several major commercial and business hubs of the city will now be exempt from loadshedding, including Jama Cloth Market and the popular Burns Road food street.

The move is part of the company’s long-term strategy to make 90% of Karachi loadshedding-free in the coming years.

According to a company spokesperson, this decision was made possible due to a noticeable improvement in timely bill payments and a significant reduction in line losses. He emphasized that consumer cooperation has played a vital role in ensuring uninterrupted power supply.

The spokesperson added that wherever electricity theft is curbed and payment compliance improves, further reductions in loadshedding — or even complete exemptions — will be provided.

Official data shows that so far, around 70% of Karachi’s areas have already been exempted from loadshedding. During the current fiscal year alone, K-Electric claims to have removed over 330,000 kilograms of illegal connections (kundas) as part of its drive to minimize electricity theft.

Looking ahead, K-Electric’s long-term strategy includes investment in smart grid technology, installation of modern infrastructure, and overall improvement in the power supply system.

The company has set an ambitious goal to make Karachi completely free from loadshedding by 2030.

However, the spokesperson warned that in areas where bill recovery remains poor or electricity theft is still prevalent, loadshedding will continue — and in cases of persistent mismanagement, it may even increase.
