KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami has announced it will hold a street protest on August 7 against the government’s levy and taxes on petrol, terming the charge an “extortion levy” that is unacceptable for ordinary people.

Speaking to the media in Karachi, Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman said the youth should come out on the streets, park their motorcycles as part of the demonstration, and record their protest peacefully and collectively.

He said Munem Zafar will announce and lead the Karachi protest against the petrol levy and would record his protest in a peaceful and resolute manner.

The announcement comes as the Petroleum Division has notified that the petroleum development levy (PDL) on petrol, high-speed diesel (HSD), and kerosene will remain unchanged following the government’s shift toward a daily fuel pricing mechanism.

The notification stated the levy on petrol remains Rs 80 per litre and on HSD remains Rs 70.82 per litre, while kerosene levy continues at Rs 20.36 per litre.

Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman also addressed political dynamics, saying that the PPP and MQM were “wrestling with each other,” adding that PPP and MQM are allies.
