ISLAMABAD: Police on Wednesday apprehended a wanted criminal gang member involved in car theft across Islamabad district.
According to the source, on a tip-off, a police team arrested a notorious gang member Rizwan alias Bichho after an encounter near Sangjani Toll Plaza within the limits of Tarnol police station.
Sources said a police party tried to stop a vehicle stolen from Islamabad near Sangjani Toll Plaza; however, the accused Rizwan alias Bichhu opened fire on the police team. During the exchange of fire continued for about half an hour, police managed to arrest the accused.
Weapons used in the incident, including three vehicles worth Rs 2.5 million were also recovered from the possession of the arrested accused. Accused Rizwan has been challenged in 16 cases while he has been convicted in nine cases, police said.
During the preliminary investigation, the accused revealed that he stole six vehicles from the Islamabad and one from Rawalpindi.

Earlier, the police had launched a search operation in various districts of Rawalpindi against several culprits involved in major crimes.
According to details, the police had arrested almost eleven suspects during the search operation from various parts of the city.
A large contingent of police, including ladies police, elite section, and other law enforcement agencies took part in the operation. The police spokesperson said that the search operation was aimed at eradicating anti-social elements from the city.
