Netflix’s recently released limited series ‘Baby Reindeer’ just dropped last week and has already stuck in our minds for its brave, moving, amazing, and often disturbing story.
The new 7-episode mini-series show sees comedian Richard Gadd turn his experiences with a female stalker. This makes us wonder to what extent is Baby Reindeer on Netflix a true story. Here’s everything we know about the mini-series:
What is Baby Reindeer about?
Gadd’s fictionalized character, Donny Dunn, develops a warped and complicated relationship with a woman named Martha after meeting her at the bar where he works. Although she initially appears to be friendly, her behavior unravels into stalking in real life and over social media. What begins as an act of kindness soon becomes something much more sinister for them both.
Is Baby Reindeer a true story?
Yes, it’s based on a true story! While Gadd plays a fictional version of himself, a mid-Fringe comedian called Donny Dunn, and he renames his real-life stalker, most of what viewers see on screen happened to Gadd in real life. The show provides a somewhat ambiguous ending.
What actually happened?
Gadd has been very open about the fact that he was stalked for four years by a woman who called him “Baby Reindeer.” Apparently, she constantly followed him to his comedy gigs and even showed up at his house.
She sent Gadd a staggering 41,071 emails, 350 hours of voicemail, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages, and 106 pages of letters. She also sent him an array of slightly sinister gifts—sleeping pills, a woolly hat, brand-new boxer shorts, and a reindeer toy.
Where Is the Real Martha Now?
As of writing, there is no information on where the real Martha is. Gadd told The Independent that his dealings with his stalker are over, although he continues to handle the “emotional ramifications” from the ordeal:
“I suppose the situation, shall we say, my dealings with the person who stalked me is certainly over. The emotional ramifications do live on.” He also spoke with Telegraph about his stalker’s possible reaction to the series and the play, hoping that she feels embarrassed by what happened:
