The federal government has declared a public holiday on November 9 to honor the birth anniversary of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Pakistan’s national poet and philosopher.
The Cabinet Division has issued a formal notification regarding the holiday on Thursday.
Iqbal Day, observed annually on November 9th, celebrates the life and legacy of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, a central figure in Urdu literature and a foundational thinker in Pakistan’s ideological history.
Allama Iqbal came up with the concept of Pakistan and utilized poetry to inspire Muslims, particularly the subcontinent’s youth, to fight against their British overlords and demand their own country.
This day is commemorated with various ceremonies, poetry readings, and educational events that highlight his contributions to philosophy and national identity.
Moreover, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced a bank holiday on November 9, 2024, in observance of Iqbal Day.
“The State Bank of Pakistan will remain closed on Saturday, November 9, 2024, as a public holiday on the occasion of Allama Iqbal Day, as declared by the Government of Pakistan,” stated a circular issued by the SBP’s Banking Policy and Regulations Department on Wednesday.
