Instagram is introducing a new limit on hashtags, allowing only five per post and reel, in a move aimed at reducing spam and improving content discovery.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri confirmed the change, emphasizing that posts should focus on quality rather than quantity. In a recent update on his advice channel, Mosseri said, “While it might be tempting to add more, a few well-chosen hashtags perform better than a long list of generic ones. Quality over quantity is key.”
The platform has been experimenting with hashtag restrictions over the past year, at times limiting some users to just three hashtags. Now, a universal cap of five hashtags per post has been established.
Instagram explained that the new limit encourages more thoughtful use of hashtags and helps curb spam and scam activity.
Users are advised to select relevant tags and avoid overly generic ones, such as #reels or #explore, to maximize reach and engagement.
