Meta’s social media giants, Instagram and Facebook, are currently experiencing a widespread service disruption, leaving users worldwide unable to access the platforms.
According to Down Detector, Facebook has received over 158,000 reports of downtime since approximately 3:00 pm on March 5, with Instagram tallying over 26,000 reports during the same period. This disruption, which surfaced late on Tuesday, prompted frustrated users to flock to alternative platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), where they shared their grievances with a touch of humor through memes.
The glitches affecting Facebook and Messenger became evident as users were abruptly logged out and unable to regain access, even with the correct login credentials. Additionally, Instagram’s News Feed is displaying an error message. The majority of issue reports attribute the problems to the apps, with 72 percent for Facebook, 64 percent for Instagram, and Messenger at 50 percent.
As of now, neither Facebook nor Instagram has issued statements regarding the cause of the disruption.
