India began its ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 64-run victory over Pakistan at Edgbaston, thanks to impressive performances from Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, India recovered from an early setback of 18 for 2 to post a competitive total of 170 for 6 in 20 overs.
Smriti Mandhana led the charge with a brilliant 68 off 44 deliveries, striking nine fours and two sixes. She shared a crucial 91-run partnership with captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who contributed 36 runs. Richa Ghosh then provided late momentum with a rapid 34 off just 17 balls.
For Pakistan, Sadia Iqbal was the most successful bowler, claiming two wickets.
Chasing 171, Pakistan struggled to build partnerships and lost wickets at regular intervals. Opener Muneeba Ali offered some resistance with a fighting 41 off 35 balls, but the rest of the batting lineup failed to make a significant impact. Pakistan was eventually bowled out for 106 in 17 overs.
Deepti Sharma starred with the ball, taking two more wickets and becoming the first spinner in women’s international cricket to reach the milestone of 350 wickets.
The victory gave India a strong start to its World Cup campaign, while Pakistan was left searching for answers after a disappointing performance.
