An important development has emerged for electricity consumers regarding the replacement of faulty electricity meters.

Under the Ministry of Energy’s reform initiatives, the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) has significantly reduced the replacement period for defective electricity meters, limiting it to just one month.

According to the Power Division, the measure has been introduced to provide consumers with faster and more efficient services. Under the new policy, faulty or unserviceable electricity meters will be replaced in a much shorter time than before, helping to improve the resolution of consumer complaints.

A Power Division spokesperson said that the Ministry of Energy’s reform programme is producing positive results.

During the 2025–26 fiscal year, GEPCO has shown a significant improvement in performance and has become the second electricity distribution company in Pakistan, after the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), to reduce its line losses to single digits.

According to official figures, GEPCO’s line losses have declined from 10.43% to 9.80%, while the company’s billing recovery rate has exceeded 100%, a development being described as a significant achievement for Pakistan’s power sector.

The spokesperson further stated that, owing to effective financial management, GEPCO’s contribution to the circular debt has remained at zero. In addition, the company’s anti-electricity theft campaign resulted in national savings of Rs5.2 billion over the past year.

Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari praised the company’s performance, saying that data-driven monitoring of electricity distribution companies is delivering positive results. He added that the government is regularly reviewing the line losses and recovery performance of all distribution companies (DISCOs) and will not compromise on achieving the prescribed targets.

He further said that the complete digitalisation of the billing and recovery system is a key component of the government’s energy sector reform plan and will further enhance transparency and operational efficiency.
