KARACHI: An illegal slaughterhouse has been operating within Zaman Town area supplying substandard meat to adjoining areas while authorities have failed to take any action.

The meat from weak, sick animals is slaughtered and sent to various localities including Landhi, Korangi, Qayyumabad and other posh localities and private companies. Police allegedly received million per week in bribes from the slaughterhouse.

The slaughterhouse is located in Korangi Sector 48-B in Gilgiti Mohallah of Zaman Town and is considered the largest illegal abattoir in the city. Dozens of sick, unhealthy cows and buffaloes are brought from Cattle Colony at night while water pressure techniques are used to inflate the weight of the meat.

The meat is then supplied in the adjoining areas. It is also sent to the post locality of Defence Housing Authority and even supplied to several hotels and restaurants. Sources informed that work starts at the slaughterhouse late at night and the spurious meat is supplied by 10AM to the markets.

It has also been revealed that concerned authorities including Veterinary Department, DMC Korangi and Zaman Town police have refrained from taking action after allegedly receiving underhand payments worth millions every week.
