The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially released a revised knockout schedule for the 2026 T20 World Cup, introducing a strategic venue allocation plan designed to manage the high-stakes qualification scenarios of co-hosts India and Sri Lanka, alongside Pakistan.
With the Super Eight stage reaching its climax, the ICC clarified that the location of the semi-finals will depend entirely on which heavyweights secure a spot in the final four.
Semi-Final 1: The Colombo vs. Kolkata Toss-up
Date: Wednesday, March 4, 2026
The venue for the first semi-final remains flexible to accommodate regional fans and security protocols:
- Priority 1 (Colombo): If Pakistan qualifies, they are locked in to play at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
- Priority 2 (Colombo): If Pakistan misses out but Sri Lanka advances (and isn’t playing India), the match stays in Colombo.
Default (Kolkata): If neither Pakistan nor Sri Lanka makes the cut, the match will be held at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Semi-Final 2: The Mumbai Contingency
Date: Thursday, March 5, 2026
- The second semi-final is primarily slated for the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, but with one major exception:
- The India Factor: If India qualifies, they will automatically play in Mumbai to maximize home advantage.
The “Neutral” Clause: In the event of an India vs. Pakistan semi-final clash, the match will be shifted to Colombo to adhere to neutral territory protocols.
The ICC stated that these “if-then” arrangements were circulated to all stakeholders to streamline broadcasting, ticketing, and team travel.
By locking in Colombo as the alternate hub for India-Pakistan fixtures, the council aims to avoid last-minute security scrambles while ensuring a packed house for the tournament’s biggest games.
With Pakistan and New Zealand recently sharing points due to a washout, the race for that Colombo semi-final slot is tighter than ever.
