The aunt of the only newborn who survived the PIMS Hospital nursery fire has claimed that she rescued the baby herself, contradicting the hospital administration’s assertion that a female doctor saved the infant.

Speaking to the media, the woman rejected the hospital administration’s claim that a female doctor rescued the infant, saying she herself pulled her sister’s daughter from the burning ward.

She said she was present when the fire broke out and rushed towards the ward. As she approached, she saw a female doctor running out. When she asked what had happened, the doctor told her to call a man. After calling someone, she was informed that a fire had broken out.

The woman said she immediately ran inside, telling staff that her niece was still inside. She entered the ward and picked up the baby. She suffered minor burns to her hair and shoulder during the rescue.

She alleged that there was not a single doctor inside the ward at the time and that the doctors were running to save themselves.

She added that a male doctor was also present but fled the scene.

The woman said she had to take both her sister, who had undergone surgery, and the newborn to safety.

She further claimed that PIMS administration had repeatedly contacted her, at times questioning whether she had rescued the wrong baby and at other times claiming that a nurse had rescued the infant. She said she saw no nurse inside the ward during the incident.

Earlier, PIMS administration had claimed that a female doctor rescued the only surviving baby among 16 newborns, while the other 15 died.

According to the preliminary report, the incident was not caused by an air-conditioner compressor explosion or an electrical short circuit. Instead, the fire reportedly broke out after a nebulizer attached to an incubator, used to monitor oxygen levels, exploded. The report said the oxygen caught fire immediately after the nebulizer exploded. The fire was initially limited in intensity but spread […]
