AI tools are great, but not at the cost of your privacy. When Meta launched Muse Image, a new AI image generation tool on Instagram and WhatsApp that can use publicly posted content to create AI-generated material, it received widespread criticism.
It should be noted that Muse Image is available through the Meta AI app and web browser, as well as on WhatsApp and in Instagram Stories for US users.
Privacy International has criticized the feature, calling it “the latest sign” that AI companies view people’s images and data as raw material for exploitation.
Meta, however, says users have the option to prevent their images from being used, even if they have public accounts.
The company said private accounts and accounts belonging to users under 18 are automatically excluded, while adult users with public accounts can opt out through a few simple steps. Meta also said it would take action against content that violates its Community Standards.
How to opt out of Muse Image
Users with public Instagram accounts can disable the feature by changing their settings. To opt out of Meta’s Muse Image scanning:
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap the menu and open Settings.
- Select the Share and Reuse option.
- Turn off the toggle for “Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features.”
Private accounts do not have this option because their content is already excluded from being used by the feature.
