The Sindh government has initiated drug testing in public colleges across the province to address the escalating issue of substance abuse in educational institutions.
According to a notification from the provincial College Education Department, a three-member committee has been formed to coordinate with medical screening teams conducting random drug tests on students.
In addition to overseeing these tests, the committee will organize seminars, workshops, and awareness sessions in collaboration with stakeholders at their respective colleges. These initiatives aim to educate students about the detrimental effects of drug use on their health, academics, and career prospects.
Addressing the Sindh Assembly last November, Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Control Sharjeel Inam Memon highlighted the growing challenge of narcotics consumption in society.
He said that drug use, including cocaine, marijuana, heroin, and synthetic substances like ice and crystal meth, has become increasingly prevalent, with cocaine misuse being perceived as a status symbol in elite circles.
