ISLAMABAD: The widening chasm between official government austerity rhetoric and the reality on the ground was on full display today in the heart of the capital when, at approximately 12:40 PM at the PSO petrol station in sector F6, a state-owned vehicle was observed sitting stationary with a jack replacing one of its tyres, while the engine remained running for a full thirty minutes.
Austerity measures in Pakistan: this car has been standing at a tyre shop for the last 30 minutes with its engine still running, no one inside, and a deflated tyre. Fuel may be expensive for the public, but apparently not for government cars@NKMalazai @haider_mehtab pic.twitter.com/YC2Rfk4uQP

Reported by local journalist Waqar Bhatti, the incident serves as a stark contradiction to the federal government’s widely publicized “14-point austerity plan.”
While the administration continues to promote measures aimed at easing the national economic crisis—including significant reductions in fuel allowances for government officials and the mandatory grounding of a large portion of the state fleet—the scene at the petrol pump suggested a different narrative. For the average citizen grappling with relentless inflation and high fuel costs, the sight of a government engine burning fuel needlessly while the vehicle sat idle on a jack felt like a bitter irony.
When questioned about the decision to keep the engine running, a transport supervisor at the scene offered a mundane justification, stating that the vehicle’s battery was low and that running the engine was necessary to keep the vehicle functional.
However, this technical excuse did little to pacify observers who viewed it as a symbol of the double standards inherent in the current administration’s approach to fiscal discipline, where austerity measures seem to apply exclusively to the public.

بیٹری ڈاؤن ہے اس لئے گاڑی سٹارٹ رکھی ہوئی ہے
ساری بچت اور مہنگائی عوام کے لئے رہ گئی ہے

The frustration surrounding the incident was further intensified by an attempt to stifle public oversight. Witnesses who attempted to record the scene or take photographs were met with direct threats from those associated with the vehicle. This hostile reaction highlights an increasingly sensitive environment where government representatives appear resistant to the very accountability that is expected of them.
As the federal government continues to champion its economic rectification measures, the image of taxpayer-funded resources being squandered in plain view serves as a poignant reminder that, for many within the bureaucratic machinery, the era of sacrifice remains a policy strictly for everyone else.
