KARACHI: In a historic milestone for Pakistan’s tech landscape, 26-year-old Karachi native Sualeh Asif has debuted on the Forbes- Billionaires List, following the meteoric rise of his AI-powered software venture, Cursor.

Asif, an MIT alumnus who once represented Pakistan on the global stage as a math prodigy, is now being hailed as one of the most influential figures in the generative AI revolution.

The surge in Asif’s net worth follows a massive capital injection for Cursor. In November 2025, the startup reached a staggering $29.3 billion valuation after securing $2.3 billion in a funding round. The investment was co-led by venture capital titans Accel and Coatue, signaling immense institutional confidence in the company’s trajectory.

Market analysts note that Cursor’s growth is not merely speculative. The company claims to have crossed $1 billion in annualized revenue, cementing its status as one of the fastest-growing AI startups in history.

From Karachi to the Global Stage
Before becoming a fixture in Silicon Valley, Asif was well-known in Pakistan’s academic circles. A brilliant mathematician, he represented the country at the International Math Olympiad (IMO) for three consecutive years, from 2016 to 2018.

His journey took him from the streets of Karachi to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where his entrepreneurial spirit took root. While still a student at MIT, Asif founded an AI-powered search engine company, a precursor to his current success in the field of large language models (LLMs).

Asif co-founded Cursor alongside three MIT colleagues, aiming to streamline the often-tedious process of software development. Today, the tool has become an industry standard.

According to company data:
– User Base: Millions of software developers worldwide.
– Enterprise Adoption: 50,000 enterprises have integrated the tool into their workflows.
– High-Profile Clients: Global giants including Nvidia, Adobe, Uber, and Shopify rely on Cursor to generate and edit complex chunks of code.

The ‘Cursor’ Effect
The tool’s success lies in its ability to act as an “AI pair programmer,” allowing engineers to interact with their entire codebase through natural language. By automating routine coding tasks, Cursor has significantly reduced development cycles for major tech firms.

For Pakistan, Asif’s inclusion in the *Forbes- list is seen as a “watershed moment.”

“Sualeh’s success is a testament to the raw talent present in Pakistan’s youth,” said a local tech analyst. “To go from the IMO to the helm of a $29 billion company by age 26 is an extraordinary feat that will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of Pakistani founders.”
