KARACHI: Renowned jurist and former chief election commissioner, Fakhruddin G Ebrahim, passed away in Karachi on Tuesday.
His funeral will be offered at Noor Bagh Graveyard, Mewa Shah, where he will be laid to rest. He was aged 91.
Ebrahim was appointed to several prominent posts throughout his life. He was a former attorney general of Pakistan and has also served in the capacities of the federal minister for law and governor.
He had also served as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and was among a few others who refused to take oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) promulgated by then army chief General Zia-ul-Haq.
He served as the attorney general of Pakistan during Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s government and was later appointed Governor Sindh. He was also appointed as the federal law minister in the caretaker set-up after former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s government was dismissed in 1996.
On July 23, 2012 he was appointed the chief election commissioner during the era of the Pakistan Peoples Party. The general elections on May 11, 2013 and the presidential elections were held during his tenure.
He was born on February 12, 1928 in Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat, present-day India. Ebrahim attended the Gujrat Vidyapith and received an undergraduate degree in law in 1949.
In 1950, Ebrahim migrated to Pakistan and attended Sindhi Muslim College. He received LLM degree and an honourary Juris Doctor in 1960 and later established his own law firm by the name of Fakhruddin G Ebrahim & Company.
