KARACHI: At least five people, including two women, suffocated to death after a fire broke out overnight at their house in Mohammed Ali Society.
The tragic incident occurred at a house located on Miran Shah Road, Bahadurabad. Fire brigade officials said the blaze engulfed a house on the first floor of a three-storey building.
Police said there were seven individuals present at the house at the time of the accident. Five of them were shifted to a hospital in an unconscious condition. Rescue officers said the deadly fire broke out because of a short circuit.
The deceased, aged between 45 and 80 years died of suffocation due to the fire. They were identified as 80-year-old Sultan Mirza, Shazia aged 72, Sabiha aged 78, Farhat Mirza aged 60, and 45-year-old Akbar, One of the victims, Farhat Mirza, was a professor at the Jinnah Sindh Medical University
A member of the firefighting team sustained injuries while extinguishing the fire. However, his condition is said to be safe. The fire department said the blaze was doused with the help of three fire tenders.
Rescue officials said the firefighters had difficulty evacuating the residents as the fire was intense. They said five of the residents had lost consciousness due to excessive smokes in their rooms and were shifted to hospital.
