ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Haider Zaidi has said that substantial growth in Cargo handling at ports over the last 11 months clearly reflects robust economic activity.
On a social media website Twitter, he said that from July-May 2021, Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Cargo handling has been registering more than 25.71 percent growth year on year basis.
“Similarly container Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) showed more than 13.6 percent while ship movements exhibited 21.3 percent growth,” the minister added. He said the volume of Port Qasim Cargo handling was also on rising, showing more than 2.65 percent growth.

Earlier, the Ministry of commerce had implemented prerequisite transshipment and transit rules for bulk cargoes at Karachi port, which is to pave way for its full-fledged operation and ease the handling burden on other ports in the country.
The ministry advised all the stakeholders that import and export policy order has been implemented through shipping procedure and instruments to operationalize trade through the port.
The ministry, in a letter also said the trade-related infrastructure in Gwadar port is ready to handle bulk cargoes to and from Afghanistan. The letter was sent to Pakistan Ship Agents Association, Pakistan International Freight Forwarders Association, National Logistics Cell and All Pakistan Shipping Association.
