As cricket fever grips the continent, all eyes are on Dubai today as arch-rivals India and Pakistan prepare for a high-voltage clash in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025.

The excitement follows last night’s gripping opener, where Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets, kicking off the Super Four round with a bang.

But beyond the present drama lies a rich history. Here’s a comprehensive look at the Asia Cup’s legacy, its evolution, and the teams that have triumphed over the decades.

History:
The Asia Cup is the premier men’s cricket tournament in Asia, organized by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Established in 1983, the first edition took place in Sharjah, UAE, in 1984, featuring India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. India emerged as the inaugural champion by topping the round-robin points table.

The tournament was originally designed to promote goodwill among Asian nations through cricket. Over the years, it has evolved both in format and participation, reflecting the changing landscape of Asian cricket.

Formats and Frequency:
Initially played in the One Day International (ODI) format, the Asia Cup has seen inconsistencies in its scheduling, mostly due to political tensions—most notably the 1993 edition, which was canceled amid India-Pakistan disputes.

From 2016 onward, the Asia Cup adopted a dual-format structure, alternating between ODI and Twenty20 International (T20I) formats to align with global ICC tournaments. For example:

The tournament is typically held every two years, although logistical and diplomatic issues have occasionally caused delays or hybrid hosting models—like in 2023, when matches were split between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Hosts:
The Asia Cup has been hosted across various countries, including:

UAE
India
Sri Lanka
Bangladesh
Pakistan
This year’s edition, Asia Cup 2025, is being hosted entirely in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28.

Winning Teams:

India – 8 Titles: 1984, 1988, 1990-91, 1995, 2010, 2016, 2018, 2023
India has been the most dominant force, especially during the 1980s, 1990s, and the 2010s.
Sri Lanka – 6 Titles:  1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014, 2022.
Pakistan – 2 Titles: 2000, 2012
