Emma Corrin has called for the Oscars to introduce gender-neutral awards at future ceremonies.
The actor, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, said ‘they’ did not believe current categories were currently ‘inclusive enough’.
In a new interview with the BBC’s Today program, Emma said they felt shows like the Oscars and Baftas, which retain separate Best Actor and Best Actress categories, were not “inclusive enough at the moment”.
When asked if they supported the introduction of gender-neutral categories, they responded, “I hope for a future in which that happens. The categories now don’t seem to be wide enough. It’s important for everyone to feel heard and represented.”
The 22-year-old, who is best known for their portrayal of Princess Diana in the television series The Crown, continued, “It’s difficult for me at the moment trying to justify in my head being non-binary and being nominated in female categories.”
Emma added: “When it comes to categories, do we need to make it specific as to whether you’re being nominated for a female role or a male role?”
“I think that it was necessary for me to be open and honest about it because otherwise I would have felt I was being perceived wrongly.”
Emma won a Golden Globe in 2021 for their performance in The Crown, and quietly came out as non-binary on Instagram later that year.
