Earthquake jolts GB block KKH, other roads

GILGIT-BALTISTAN: Landslides and boulders have blocked different roads in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) including the Karakoram Highway (KKH) Chilas district, acerbic the area with the rest of the country after heavy earthquakes and aftershocks jolted the region.
According to sources, the Karakoram Highway (KKH) remained blocked at the Thalichi area near Chilas in the wee hours of Tuesday after the earthquake jolted Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to Gilgit-Baltistan’s  Public Works Department (GB -PWD), the landslides the roads blocked for traffic on a portion of the KKH at Thalichi area, some 10 kilometers from Chilas, rendering several passengers to spend the night under the sky in severe cold temperature.
Meanwhile, Gilgit-Skardu road also blocked near Kachura, Astak and Shingus-Bulachi after heavy landslides, due to earthquake.
According to GB police, the strategic KKH also remained blocked near Murtazaabad, Nilt Nagar and Sost after landslides hit the artery.
GB police department officials told that road lead to Astor district near Douyoun, Skardu road, Ghizer-Chitral road remained blocked after the earthquake.
Police also said no causalities have been reported yet, while The Frontier Works Organisation did not issue any information regarding the closure of the KKH and other roads in the region.
Earlier, four to five earthquakes measuring 5.4 on the Rector scale hit the GB region and the epicenter was various areas including 5.1 magnitudes in Jaglot, 4.1 magnitudes near Jalalabad and 4.1 Khaplu.
