On Wednesday, the United Nations General Assembly, with a heavy majority, once again approved a resolution demanding an end to Israeli attacks in Gaza. However, this time, the United States and Israel stood shoulder to shoulder in opposing the resolution to halt the brutal killing of Palestinian children.
Shamelessly and defiantly, they joined eight other countries to oppose the resolution aimed at stopping Israel’s savage bombing.
Since the General Assembly does not grant the United States any special privileges, America couldn’t prevent the approval of the resolution to halt Israeli aggression. The General Assembly represents all the nations of the world, whose sovereignty, borders, and freedom have been endorsed by the United Nations. Therefore, the General Assembly has 193 member countries from around the world.
Today, the world is predominantly based on democratic principles. It can be said that democracy is not just a prevailing trend but a reality deeply embedded in the vocabulary of the contemporary world. That’s why the self-proclaimed global policeman, the United States, is not only an advocate and guardian of democracy but also unhesitatingly employs various forms of military, psychological, political, and social hardship and violence to enforce democracy according to its own terms, understanding, interests, and interpretation.
Hoisting the flag of democracy and being the global watchdog, America has fought numerous direct and proxy wars in its recent history. These battles have left a trail of stories colored with the blood of North Africa, Latin America, the Far and Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Even today, these wars continue in various geographical regions of the world.
The struggle for the enforcement of democracy and the vigilance of democratic destinies in this war have compelled the United States to provide its support and umbrella for the resolutions presented at the United Nations. However, it couldn’t prevent the approval of the resolution to halt Israel’s brutal bombing, as the United Nations General Assembly has become the forum for the collective conscience of humanity.
The United States and the United Nations are the two major guardians of democracy in the present world. While they always appear to be on the same page when it comes to safeguarding democracy, examining their roles reveals that, in reality, the United States acts contrary to democracy’s essence.
The book of the past is filled with stories of the dual roles of the United Nations and the United States in safeguarding democracy. Looking at their actions in the current era, Palestine screams out that they are hypocritical, deceitful, and shameless, with no connection to true democracy.
The United Nations Security Council is the most effective and powerful forum of the United Nations. It seems that democracy, in the form of the United Nations, has given the world its largest institution. The Security Council is also the most powerful part of it. It was expected that the Security Council would be the epitome of democracy, evident in its decisions, roles, and announcements characterized by justice, equality, and the well-being of humanity. However, it seems that, in reality, democracy is not a humanistic system. Rather, it is the opposite.
In democracy, the majority holds importance. The decision that the majority supports becomes the final verdict. This aspect is also evident in the descriptions of democracy provided by both the United Nations and the United States. But is this really happening? Certainly not. The existence of the United Nations was to rescue humanity from wars. The majority of all countries in the world are crying out for peace. Agreements upon agreements are being approved. However, the United Nations’ first failure is that, despite its existence, Israel has been waging continuous war on Gaza for two months, and the United Nations remains a silent spectator.
The second failure of the United Nations is related to the defense of democracy. Most countries around the world are shouting for an end to hostilities. Resolutions upon resolutions are being approved. While all the resolutions in the General Assembly have been successful with a clear majority, when the same resolution reaches the Security Council, one of the five veto-wielding powers, usually the United States, stands up, showing the world the middle finger.
The General Assembly has today approved another resolution in support of a ceasefire, but when this resolution reaches the Security Council, America will once again, by using its veto power, alone betray the entire world by granting Israel a license for oppression and aggression. This veto vote will not just render a ceasefire resolution unsuccessful; it will show the middle finger to democracy itself, the democracy that the United Nations upholds and upon which this global institution is founded.
