KARACHI: The death toll from a broiler explosion at a factory in New Karachi industrial area has reached ten while more than thirty people have been confirmed injured in the incident.

The incident occurred on Tuesday after a boiler exploded within an ice depot in New Karachi Industrial Area. The blast affected the infrastructure and the power supply in the densely-populated area and also affected two adjoining factories and residential buildings.

Police said the factory’s owner has settled in Canada with his family. Police suspect that the incident occurred after some chemicals were mixed in the broiler.

Sources revealed that explosive material may have used in the incident and further investigation is underway. Law enforcement agencies have raised suspicion and have sought a report to know the nature of the explosion.

DIG West will head a committee comprising of SSP Central, SP Gulberg, SP Liaquatabad and the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS). The committee has already visited the site of the explosion in the factory located near Saba Cinema.

The team will also seek the assistance of inspectors and the BDS team. Police have refused to give a statement until the final report is received confirming whether explosive material was used in the incident.

After the incident, rescue officials and law enforcement agencies had reached the spot and shifted the injured to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. One of the injured workers said the broiler’s operator was present when the explosion happened. He said he along with other workers were in a nearby room when the explosion occurred and the wall collapsed and injured him.
