The distribution of charitable donations by merchants during the last days of the holy month of Ramadan was taking place when the stampede occurred, according to a statement by the Houthi-controlled Ministry of Interior’s spokesperson.
Hundreds of people had crowded into a school to receive the donations, which amounted to 5,000 Yemeni riyals, or about $9 per person, two witnesses involved in the rescue effort told media.
A video posted by Houthi television on the Telegram messaging app depicted a chaotic scene, with a large crowd of people jostling each other. Security personnel attempted to control the situation, pushing people back as some screamed and shouted for help.
After the stampede, scores of discarded shoes, a crutch, and clothing were found on the steps of the building. Forensic investigators in protective white suits sorted through personal belongings.
The interior ministry confirmed that the two merchants responsible for organizing the donation event had been detained, and an investigation was underway.
