Cricketer David Warner has pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol as the former Australian opener faced various penalties including prison sentence of up to 9 months.
According to foreign media reports, Warner was charged in Sydney in April this year after being caught driving after consuming alcohol. The offence was confirmed through a random breath test.
Reports said that in May, Warner’s lawyer informed the court that the former batter had accepted responsibility for the incident and described it as a foolish mistake. Warner was not required to appear personally in court during Wednesday’s hearing.
His lawyer formally informed the court that Warner had entered a guilty plea; however, he will be sentenced during a hearing scheduled for August 18.
According to media reports, the possible penalties for the offence include a minimum six-month driving disqualification, a fine of up to 2,200 Australian dollars, and a potential jail sentence of up to nine months.
It was reported that Warner had traveled to Sydney for a short break during the Pakistan Super League. After attending a gathering with friends, he was returning home when he underwent a drink-driving test, which returned a positive result, leading to the charge.
