Earlier in February, Darren Sammy said he was honored to be given Pakistan’s civilian award and thanked the country for showering love on him.
Sammy, who led West Indies to two World T20 Cup titles, remains a popular figure in Pakistan after helping in return of international cricket in the country.
Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afridi had revealed that they had requested for the honorary citizenship of Pakistan for Darren Sammy owing to his contributions to the league in particular and bringing cricket back to the country in general.
“I am truly honored to be given this civilian award. We took a small step in the right direction in 2017 and look at us here today. All the foreign players played their part. Thank u Pakistan for the love shown to us. We only want U to experience cricket at home.#LOVEWINS.” Sammy tweeted.
Sammy played an important role in helping bring back international cricket to the country when in 2017 he agreed to come to Lahore and play in the PSL final after the majority of the foreign players declined to play in the country due to security concerns.
