Consumers using multiple electricity meters may lose protected tariff status

Bad news has emerged for consumers using more than one single-phase electricity meter to obtain subsidised electricity bills, as power distribution companies have decided to compile a complete record of such users.

According to media reports, consumers using additional meters to benefit from the protected-category subsidy may now be shifted to the non-protected category, which could result in an increase of Rs8,000 to Rs10,000 in electricity bills.

Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), along with other electricity distribution companies, has started printing QR codes on electricity bills.

Through these QR codes, data regarding consumers holding additional meters will be collected to ensure that subsidies are provided only to genuinely deserving users.

Officials stated that consumers who fail to upload the required data, or those found obtaining subsidies through additional meters, may have their subsidies immediately withdrawn.
