WASHINGTON: Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa landed in the United States for a week-long visit, which includes meetings with senior officials of the Biden administration.
On Friday, Gen. Bajwa and his top advisers arrived at LaGuardia in New York after departing from London on his official aircraft. He was anticipated to arrive in Washington over the weekend, and meetings had been scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. He will meet with academics who are interested in Pakistani politics on Wednesday as well as members of several think tanks.
Pakistan’s Ambassador Sardar Masood Khan confirmed the arrival of the Army Chief when journalists asked him for information about the visit.
While the ambassador declined to reveal the chief’s schedule, sources claimed Gen. Bajwa was scheduled to meet with CIA Director William J. Burns, National Intelligence Director Avril D. Haines, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
Officials from Pakistan are also attempting to arrange a meeting with Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state. Source: “It is quite plausible, but not verified yet.”
The army chief has maintained frequent communication with US government representatives over the past few years, but his most recent official travel to the country took place in 2019 when he accompanied Imran Khan, who was then prime minister, on a three-day trip to Washington.
