The Sindh government has enforced the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2024, introducing a major change to vehicle registration rules by making number plates the personal property of vehicle owners rather than being tied to the vehicle itself.
According to a notification issued by the Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department Sindh, vehicle number plates will now be registered against the owner’s Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC).
This means the number plate will belong to the individual and not the vehicle’s chassis number, and owners will be allowed to retain their registered number plates even after selling their vehicles.
Under the new policy, if a vehicle owner purchases another car, they can transfer and affix their previously registered number plate to the newly acquired vehicle. Authorities have also introduced two new number plate series linked to CNIC registration.
It should be noted that the government had rolled out Ajrak-designed, high-security number plates under the revised system.
