Karachi is set to benefit from an affordable solar energy project, as KEPCO (Korean Electric Power Company) has proposed supplying electricity to K-Electric at an extremely competitive rate of Rs9.8 per unit.
This promising initiative aims to alleviate the city’s long-standing electricity challenges, which have included high rates and severe load shedding during the summer months.
According to KEPCO officials, the proposal is based on an exchange rate of Rs288.65 per US dollar, translating to a cost of 3.4 cents per kilowatt-hour. The solar energy project, planned for installation in Deh Halkani, Karachi South District, is expected to bring relief to Karachi’s residents once it receives final approval from NEPRA (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority).
K-Electric, the city’s main power provider, has also announced ambitious plans for the future, including the development of 640 MW of renewable and environmentally friendly energy projects in the coming years. This initiative is seen as a major step toward reducing the city’s dependency on non-renewable energy sources while also addressing the growing electricity demand.
While progress is being made on renewable energy projects, the public hearing scheduled by NEPRA to discuss K-Electric’s renewable energy plans has been postponed. The hearing, originally set for today, was delayed due to potential law and order concerns in Islamabad.
This solar energy initiative marks a crucial milestone in the effort to reduce energy costs for Karachi’s residents, who have struggled with high electricity rates and frequent power outages in recent years. Once the project is completed, it is expected to provide a reliable, cost-effective power supply, offering long-term benefits to the city’s residents and the environment.
