ISLAMABAD Tensions between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the government have escalated during the final stages of federal budget preparations, with key disagreements reportedly causing a deadlock between the two sides.
According to PPP sources, the government was obligated under a political agreement to share detailed budget documents and the complete draft with the party. However, despite repeated requests, the required documents have not been provided so far.
Sources said the government has not fully disclosed details of the Federal Development Programme and proposed new tax measures. Key information regarding potential new taxes, increases in existing tax rates, and petroleum levy adjustments has allegedly not been shared with the PPP.
The party has also expressed serious reservations over development schemes included in the budget. Under the agreement, PPP-backed development projects from all four provinces were expected to be part of the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), but sources claim that none of the party’s proposed projects from Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, or other provinces have been included.
The PPP has taken a firm stance, stating that it expects full implementation of the agreed terms related to the budget process.
Sources further warned that if the government fails to honor the agreement, the PPP may be forced to decide its future course of action regarding the upcoming budget session.
